Resilience Cafe was about writing an essay between two resilient people. One from history and a community member that relates to the historic person. I chose James Francis Ryan and my dad. Though it took me a while to find my historic person. Then you had to create an art piece, writing or song that represents both people, and then share it with other people at Resilience Cafe night. I chose to write a song and I presented it durring the resilient cafe.
Essay:
War. A conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or parties, sometimes resulting in deaths. Two men James Francis Ryan and Rick Sepulveda had great strength to protect ones they loved and their country. Ryan, in combat had learned about his three brother’s deaths but, didn’t head home and kept fighting till the end. Sepulveda, in battle, lost friends, and lost his father who had a severe heart attack while he was away. Different times, different wars, and still able to overcome such great hardship.
“Tell her that when you found me, I was here and I as with the only brothers I have left, and there was no way I was going to desert them” Captain Miller and a group of soldiers fought their way to get to Private Ryan. Two me dead, but they go to find out that he would not leave until that war was over. Discovering the deaths of his three brothers had hurt him so much. He had known his mother would have wanted him to go home, but she would also have understood him staying to fight with the other soldiers. But why come for him? Two men died for him, all to help a mother rejoin with her son to mourn of the three deaths of the ones they loved.
“I’ll be back I promise, I love you. Be good to your mother” these words came out of Rick’s mouth as he kissed me and my mother goodbye. Boarding a plane to head overseas to Iraq, he hadn’t know all the suffering he would go through. A friend in battle, passing away, no desire to die, just a desire to help. A steady time, he hadn’t seen bloodshed, but just the thought of someone he knew, dying in a place like thing was horrible. Driving through towns, he saw mothers with their hungered children, and all he had was a desire to see his family. He had gotten phone call, stating the news of his father. He had a severe heart attack in the middle of the night. Rick had to go home, to a funeral, visiting the family just to have to go back to the place where every soldier feared. And soon enough they didn’t know what they had been fighting for anymore.
Ryan had gone to war with all four bothers scattered across France. He had lost people he loved, but kept on going and fought till it was over. Same for my father. He had dealt with the deaths of others and the ones he loved and kept on fighting for is country. But one thing was certain, Ryan and all the other men, knew clearly what they were fighting for. But the soldier now, most don’t know what they’re fighting for and why. No solid view on what will happen. But one thing is for sure, both men fought with strong hearts, and the will to stand strong when dealing with death.
Song Lyrics:
Walking down the road
Seeing broken souls
Nothing seems better than going home right now
Never said goodbye
No matter how I tried
You don't understand my pain and hurt inside
When I finally fall asleep
Bombs are screams that break my heart
Tears are bullets in my eyes
i have missed you from the start
(Then after Evanglyn sings her verse that she made up)
