Resilience Cafe

Resilience Cafe was about writing an essay between two resilient people. One from history and a community member that relates to the historic person. I chose James Francis Ryan and my dad. Though it took me a while to find my historic person. Then you had to create an art piece, writing or song that represents both people, and then share it with other people at Resilience Cafe night. I chose to write a song and I presented it durring the resilient cafe.

Essay:
War. A conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or parties, sometimes resulting in deaths. Two men James Francis Ryan and Rick Sepulveda had great strength to protect ones they loved and their country. Ryan, in combat had learned about his three brother’s deaths but, didn’t head home and kept fighting till the end. Sepulveda, in battle, lost friends, and lost his father who had a severe heart attack while he was away. Different times, different wars, and still able to overcome such great hardship.
“Tell her that when you found me, I was here and I as with the only brothers I have left, and there was no way I was going to desert them” Captain Miller and a group of soldiers fought their way to get to Private Ryan. Two me dead, but they go to find out that he would not leave until that war was over. Discovering the deaths of his three brothers had hurt him so much. He had known his mother would have wanted him to go home, but she would also have understood him staying to fight with the other soldiers. But why come for him? Two men died for him, all to help a mother rejoin with her son to mourn of the three deaths of the ones they loved.
“I’ll be back I promise, I love you. Be good to your mother” these words came out of Rick’s mouth as he kissed me and my mother goodbye. Boarding a plane to head overseas to Iraq, he hadn’t know all the suffering he would go through. A friend in battle, passing away, no desire to die, just a desire to help. A steady time, he hadn’t seen bloodshed, but just the thought of someone he knew, dying in a place like thing was horrible. Driving through towns, he saw mothers with their hungered children, and all he had was a desire to see his family. He had gotten phone call, stating the news of his father. He had a severe heart attack in the middle of the night. Rick had to go home, to a funeral, visiting the family just to have to go back to the place where every soldier feared. And soon enough they didn’t know what they had been fighting for anymore.
Ryan had gone to war with all four bothers scattered across France. He had lost people he loved, but kept on going and fought till it was over. Same for my father. He had dealt with the deaths of others and the ones he loved and kept on fighting for is country. But one thing was certain, Ryan and all the other men, knew clearly what they were fighting for. But the soldier now, most don’t know what they’re fighting for and why. No solid view on what will happen. But one thing is for sure, both men fought with strong hearts, and the will to stand strong when dealing with death.

Song Lyrics:
Walking down the road
Seeing broken souls
Nothing seems better than going home right now

Never said goodbye
No matter how I tried
You don't understand my pain and hurt inside

When I finally fall asleep
Bombs are screams that break my heart
Tears are bullets in my eyes
i have missed you from the start

(Then after Evanglyn sings her verse that she made up)

LOTF Trial

During this trial there were many ups and downs in my performance. One of our weaknesses were communicating with our witnesses because they would lie durring the trial so many times. But I was proud of myself when i was asking questions and proving the people who lied wrong. At one point Ralph lied about participating in the dance and that was very disapointing so I proved him wrong by asking jack and Roger if Ralph was in the dance and it was that he actually was in the dance. I also made sure i asked enough questions so the jury knew the truth for example, i kept asking Roger why he pulled the lever on Piggy and if he had a reason and if Jack had ever told him to pull the lever on Piggy. From my performance in the trial i think the grade i deserve would either be an A- or a B+.

Short Story Rerflection

Title: In the Eyes of A Killer
Author: Clarissa D. Sepulveda
Genre: Suspense, Adult Fiction
Pages: 8
Mentor Texts: There aren’t any books that helped make the short story. But through watching movies and reading books I’ve grown to love horror, suspense and gore genres. So I decided to write my short story based on one of those genres and I knew gore and horror would be a little too much and so I decided for my short story to have suspense. Since I didn’t want my story to seem like those original suspense stories, I decided to have every part of my story be like the opposite of the regular cliché of a horror or suspense story. For example, rather than having the father abuse the mother, I had the mother abuse the father.
Audience: Teens and adults
Writing Process: In all I had 3 drafts for my short story; all typed. On the first draft, I was not able to complete the story for it had already been 6 pages long so Mr. Staff allowed me to turn in my first draft as the 6 pages. While writing the first draft I would write a paragraph or so and read off what I had written to make sure everything made sense and had good grammar. I also had Adam revise it for me and he made some grammar correction and gave me ideas on how to write the rest of my story.
On my second draft I was able to complete it making the story 8 pages long. I also made many grammar changes. While writing my second draft, I would edit my story several times, changing words, paragraphs and changing the way sentences where written. In the end I had Ms. Staff revise my short story, which she gave me several questions and words of advice to make my story even better.
On my third draft I didn’t have much to change. There were only grammar mistakes, but the only thing I struggled through was if I should let the reader know what happened to Sean’s mother or if I should leave them questioning like Ms. Staff did. I also wanted to make it a little more scary and have a little more gore in the end.
Publishing Process: For my short story I would like make it look like a chapter book and minimize the size. I would keep the font at times new roman, 12 point font. And I think ill just put it in the classroom library.

Project Purpose: To understand the difference between Cause/Effect Relationships and Correlations. To understand how and why major events in history are connected and intertwined (think yarn activity!). To research a major event from U.S. history in order to understand why it is significant and how it relates to other major events. To understand features of a feature article and podcast and to be able to create a feature article or podcast about your major event in history.Project Requirements:To present the 5Ws of your major event to the class. To write/peer edit/revise a feature article or podcast. To have at least three drafts in your Writing Portfolio. To present a polished version of your feature article or podcast on Media Night, as well as posting it online to our Team Featurecast from the Past web page (made by James).

Specific Concepts Learned:
My first concept I learned was about Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. I learned about what he went through in becoming a general. I also learned about how he partook in the attack on Pearl Harbor, and if it weren’t for him becoming general, the attack on Pearl Harbor may have never happened.
My second concept I learned is why Japan attacked the U.S. and happened after the attack. I learned how Japan made the attack for revenge from oil & trade embargo and how it caused Japan to have political problems.

Challenges:
A challenge I faced was recording my podcast, because when I first had recorded, half of the recordings were lost. I overcame this obstacle by going out of my way before class and re-recording my podcast with a friend.

Real-World Significance:
The real-world significance of learning about this event is that we are able to know how our country or world got to where it is today and how history can repeat itself. Also, in case we become a reporter, we would already have knowledge about making an article or podcast. And, so we know why our world is like how it is today

Querencia Clipboard

Music has been a big part of my life. It has been a way for me to connect with myself and the world. That is why music is my querencia. Music has influenced me in multiple ways. It has helped me realize what is happening in the world, all the good and bad, and how I actually a great life. It has even helped me concentrate and stay focused on my work. Music has helped me control my emotions. Playing music is a huge way I can vent my anger or deal with my problems. Many times listening to music will either make me feel a certain way, remind me of someone, or even allow me to remember certain memories in my life. Also, when I work, out I’ll listen to fast music; techno, dance, trance etc., so it can pump me up and get me moving to the beat of the music.

Though listening to music has made a big impact on me, playing music is also very important to me. The feeling of my fingers against metal makes me feel powerful. The guitar is an instrument I have loved for a very long time, even before I knew how to play it. Over the years, playing the guitar has made me improve my pitch, so when my guitar is out of tune or when I hit a sour note, I can easily detect it and fix it. It started as a hobby, and grew into something that would change my life forever. When I’d feel happy, sad, anger or even confused, I would write something that would show I felt that way. But it wasn’t always on the guitar. Sometimes it would be on the piano or even writing lyrics. Though playing the guitar might be fun, it can sometimes cause pain. Sometimes my fingers would bleed from playing so long at once, or my string will pop and slap me right on the hand, but nothing will stop me from playing. Music is my comfort zone, my everything, that is why I hope for it to always be in my life and help me move forward.
